A Cheap Weekend

It has been an exceptionally cheap weekend this weekend. Not by choice but through a series of events that have just fallen into place.

First of all our weekend shop at Tesco on Friday was cheaper then usual due to a series of money off vouchers which had dropped through the post last week. The final bill being a few pence over £20 which included all of our beer for the weekend.

Friday night's dinner was something I had dug out of the freezer at home so no spending there either!

Our plans for Saturday evening were changed last minute and we headed out to Fiskerton Fen for a peaceful evening with Sydney. So on the way through Lincoln we called in at the markets to pick something up for dinner. £5 later and we have three huge tuna steaks and then 30p later at the green grocers we have a huge bag of kale.

As it was still early afternoon we walked up Steep Hill to The Widon Cullens Well for a couple of drinks. At £5 for a pint of stout and a bourbon and diet coke this was another cheap visit. Then it was onto Fiskerton where we walked the dog before it got dark and the few fireworks we did hear began. Nothing to spend money on here in the middle of a nature reserve and we didn't fancy the 20 minute walk to the pub down dark country roads with no footpath.

Sunday was a lazy day.We had a good walk around the reserve and then a walk to the adjacent Ferry Hill Farm in the hope of buying some fresh eggs. Alas they had sold out already so we came back empty handed. Will we ever spend any money this weekend?

Then it was onto Washingborough for a quick pit stop for breakfast. Breakfast was a lovely set up of Greenhead Farm sausage, Greenhead Farm dry cured bacon and Greenhead Farm Free Range scrambled eggs served with cherry tomatoes on the vine and oyster mushrooms. Just the ticket by this time with empty plates all round.

Onwards we venture again. This time with the intention of stopping off in Lincoln for a couple of drinks. By the time we get through the lock we have changed our minds again. Let's head to the Pyewipe instead. By the time we had got there we couldn't be bothered to stop so carried onto the marina where we had a few drinks onboard instead with the heater ticking away and the slow cooked beef stew and dumplings simmering away in the slow cooker.

A very enjoyable and very cheap weekend. I don't think we will get many more of those!
