Totting Up

A quick tot up of the miles we travelled and the fuel we used suggests that the old bath tub returned some pretty impressive fuel consumption figures for our week cruising around the Broads.

We travelled 135 miles over the week and had used just 75 litres of fuel when she was refilled at the yard. We also used the diesel heating most evenings and mornings and judging by the heat output and speed of the heaters fuel pump that must have been using a half a litre per hour. So not at all bad from an engine that has racked up plenty of hours and sounded non so smooth anymore. To average 8mpg, ignoring the heating useage isn't bad at all.

No doubt our consumption was helped along by the fact that we checked the spec sheet for the engine and realised that at 1500rpm it used just 1 litre per hour. Increase that to 2000rpm and that consumption quadrupled to 4 litres per hour for very little gain in speed.
