Wet Weekend

With yet another wet, miserable and cold weekend in the pipeline we don’t have any major plans. It is the last weekend before the Easter break so we will most probably spend it fettling, polishing and cleaning to ensure that Naughty-Cal is ready for the break even if the weather isn’t.

We are quickly running out of things to fettle, which is of course a good thing, but I’m sure we can find enough to keep us occupied for yet one more wet and cold weekend in the marina. At least it will be scenic with all of the snow on the ground. Maybe a walk to the pub armed with the camera will be in order.

We expect the drive from Sheffield to Lincoln tonight will be challenging with the snow but we will allow extra time and make sure we get there safely rather than quickly.

  1. Hiya,

I have spent a bit of time today browsing your blog.. Wonderful stuff!

The good ship No Problem along with two other narrowboats are about to enter your home canal/river on our way to Boston and then across the Wash to Wisbech, so reading what we are going to expect has been very interesting indeed.

I read your blog, I think Sept 10 about narrowboats wanting all the space on the moorings.. we us lot are not going to be doing that for sure. We too hate boaters who don't/won't budge up.

I only need 4ft to moor to.. just the back end to get my girls off for their walks. The rest of the 69ft of boat can sit out in the wet stuff.

I am interested in mooring sites in your area as we will be between Torksey and Boston for a couple of weeks.. I don't mind using planks to shore.. Is it easy just to stop and moor anywhere?

  2. Sorry for the late reply to this. My I Phone has been playing up and refused to let me comment on my own blog. Bloody technology!!

It sounds like you have an interesting trip in the pipeline. You must be a brave soul because I wouldn’t fancy taking a narrowboat across the wash. It is a fickle stretch of water and is lumpy even on the calmest of days in Boston. Word of warning the stretch from Boston to Tabs Head will take you an age. It takes us an hour at 6 knots!!

As for moorings. You can moor where you like on the Fossdyke but it is shallow along most of the edges. Look out for stamped down grass signifying the deeper pull in places. Be sure to spend some time in Saxilby and Lincoln. Both are worthwhile places to stop. Cheap diesel at Tongs DIY in Saxilby as well.

As for mooring on the Witham it is a river so casual bankside mooring is not allowed, the banks are in private ownership. There are floating pontoon visitor moorings at regular intervals. Try and stop at as many as you can as there are some great places to see behind the flood banks. Our personal favourites are Fiskerton Fen, middle of nowhere feel and a nice 20 minute walk to the pub. Bardney Village has plenty of facilities and a great butchers. The Nags Head does good food as well. The White Horse at Dunsten Fen also does excellent food. Oh and no visit is complete without a visit to The Packet Inn, a warm welcome from Heather is guaranteed. And Boston is also worth a couple of days at least to explore.

Hope you enjoy your visist and get some good weather for your Wash crossing!!

  3. Gosh, thanks for that it certainly helps when visiting a waterway for the first time. Well we are at Saxilby now and have tested out the beer at the Swan.. Very nice indeed!

If this weather continues we wont be going anywhere near the Wash.. We do have a pilot and a convoy of three with a window of a week starting 6th April, I cant see that happening somehow so it might be about turn to look at the Chesterfield before another window to cross at the end of month.

Thanks again and maybe we might see you during our visit in one of the pubs!
